It all started with a desire to produce as much of our own food as possible. With success at growing our own vegetables and raising chickens for eggs, the missing link in our fridge, was dairy. "Well, hey, let's get some goats," says Jim. Starting with two Guernsey Doelings and eventually a Buck in the mix, the herd grew quickly out of "A Couple of Goats" to an established herd of these wonderful animals which not only help us put food on the table and soaps and lotions in the bathroom, but are also our good friends. So what exactly is a Guernsey Goat and why are they special? The Guernsey Goat Society says it best:
"An important part of the history of the Golden Guernsey Goat is described by Angus Watson from a 2007 article for the Financial Times about rare breeds.
"Miriam Milbourne of Guernsey is a largely forgotten heroine of the second world war. She didn’t blow up bridges or resist invasion. She did, however, risk her life to save a small herd of Golden Guernsey goats. The goats, unique to the Channel Islands, were under threat from the occupying Nazis, who were always short of food as a result of Royal Navy blockades. Milbourne was determined that they wouldn’t get her goats, so she hid them. Had the goats been found, she would have been executed. But they weren’t, and it is down to Milbourne that Golden Guernseys, with their glowing golden coats and a gracious character, survive today." Isn't that too cool! We think so!
At Pondicherry Farms, we are proud to be a supporter and propagator of this wonderful breed of Dairy Goat, in the United States. While we would love to keep every kid, we do also sell Goats occasionally, to good homes. That way the goodness of the Guernsey can continue to spread and be enjoyed on your own farm. Kids are on the way this spring. Please contact us for availability, price and further information. Suggested purchasers would be in the Pacific Northwest.
